Tennyson – Feelwitchu
This video started with a few kernels: Luke had been fascinated with Grim, a 1985 experimental short film by Takashi Itou that enchanted me with its sense of light and possession. Based on the song’s lyrics, I had a couple of ideas: a journey into the darkness and the idea that he would be thinking and not thinking while remembering while trying to forget, along the way. Those ideas crystalized into the phrase “the boat cuts the water” and the threshold of thought and consciousness. Luke is a big fan of Joe Pera and there was something genuine about the idea of Luke canoeing calmly and quietly into the darknes then juxtaposing that against the ambiguity of a nested narrative timeline. Filming on the street and under the bridge, happy accidents led us to the street sweeper, whose driver even offered to help us by driving at just the right speed. For the opening canoe shots, we paddled the 10k Mole LED Tener across the river, then set up 3x led light panels with diffusion for moonlight. A cherry picker truck came for one hour, backed into position, and with Luke in the water, we got the shots.
